Firstly, I would like to wish you all a very Happy New Year and hope that you all had a lovely Christmas and got chance to spend it with family and friends. 2017 was another busy action packed year for Exmouth Gateway with lots of firsts, including beetle drives, a fun day and nativity. We welcomed some more new members which is great and we also saw some members returning after a break away from Club. I thought before we start the 2018 what’s on and newsletters I would reflect on some of the activities / events of 2017 then look forward to this year and beyond as 2019 is a milestone for Club as we celebrate our 30th birthday.

Exmouth Gateway 2017 review: – January saw us start the year with our first beetle drive, none of us realised how much fun throwing dice and drawing body parts of a beetle could be. Look out for one at the end of Jan 18! February we cooked and ate several hundred pancakes before a trip to Torquay to watch Joseph. Despite being a very cold day we spent a while before the show shopping and having lunch before watching the show – look out for details of our trip to see Shrek at Bristol in August 18!

March – we all had a go at decorating various chocolate eggs for Easter as well as toasting and enjoying hot cross buns. In March we also learnt that our Tigers football team had secured a place in the league cup competition to take place in April. In April the Tigers took part in the League Cup Competition at Devon FA and got through to the final. During a very nerve wracking 20 minutes the Tigers played against the Plymouth Specials a side they hadn’t previously beaten and came out victorious to win the cup 3-1. Hopefully they will retain the cup if they are lucky enough to reach this years competition! They would love your support at their league matches and cup competition so please keep an eye on our website and Facebook pages for details.

In May we enjoyed a sunny Sunday trip to Bishops Lydiard where we took the steam train down to Minehead and spent the day having fun! In May, our Tigers team had their final tournament of the season and again made us all incredibly proud when they came out as league runners up. Currently we are top of the league at the half way stage.

June saw 49 of us descend upon Majorca, for several of you this was your first holiday away with us and we all experienced a different hotel in the same resort. We enjoyed a boat trip, a visit to the market, several rounds of golf, various shows as well as lots of swimming, sunbathing, shopping and having fun! For a holiday that was only going to take place the once to celebrate our 25th anniversary places for our 5th visit this year filled up quickly. Dates for this have been confirmed as the 13th – 20th June 2018 and we are currently confirming the hotel. Several of you have told us you will be going but have yet to pay a deposit. It is important that you do this asap as full and final payment of the £450 is due by 1st May at the very very latest. Places are not reserved without deposit plus if you would like to pay monthly please see Paul. For those of you who have already paid your deposit, letters will be going out in the next month with further details. If you would like to go then please let us know asap.

Our annual visit from the Exmouth Land Train took place in July, this was certainly a very noisy evening around the streets of Exmouth as we encouraged as many people as possible to return our wave. We also had a visit from our friendly ice cream man whose ice creams were enjoyed by us all as we travelled on the train. During July we also learnt that Exmouth Gateway Club had received the most nominations ever to be TSB Exmouth charity of the year from the end of August.

The weather in August was exceptionally kind to us when we held our first ever Fun Day, thanks to Jaz and all the other helpers / supporters we raised over £2000 on a very warm sunny Sunday. We were pleased that so many people turned up and have certainly learnt which stalls were popular and which weren’t for our next one. This is likely to be in 2019 as part of our 30th birthday celebrations. Whilst the Sunday was sunny we weren’t so lucky on the Monday for our summer party. We thought that for a change we would hold a bbq on the Maer and have a summer party there however the rain came in so we went back to the Club where several burgers were cooked under a gazebo and during the evening we presented the Tigers team with Polo Shirts to wear to matches.

After a fairly hectic summer September was a quieter month, the Tigers started their new season and with a couple of new players came away winning 3, drawing 1, losing 1 and taking second place in the league table. This month also saw the launch of our year as TSB Exmouths charity with a coffee morning. September also saw one of our long standing volunteers Jaz get engaged whilst on holiday in Canada J

October was a very exciting month as after several months of fund raising we were able to sign the lease on our very own brand new 12 seater multi – adaptable bus that will also accommodate a wheelchair. This will arrive during February and once we have delivery we will give you further details of how we are going to use this on a Monday evening and how it will be available to be used by other groups etc. During October 43 of us went on our annual weekend respite break to Cheltenham, we have moved the break to October with the hope the weather would be slightly better. Despite it being a bit chilly we had a lovely trip to West Midlands Safari Park, Bourton on the Water and shopping in Taunton on the way home. Many of you enjoyed the swimming / Jacuzzi as well as the evening entertainment. This years break is already booked for October to Oxford. Details for this trip can be found later on.

We enjoyed a great Halloween disco at the end of October and thanks to those who dressed up. This year we would love to see as many of you as possible in fancy dress, check out the newsletter later in the year for further details. One of our volunteers Jess also decided to throw herself out of a plane in early November to raise funds for Club – thank you Jess J November saw us planning and making the costumes for our very first nativity play, everyone was asked whether they wanted to take part and we probably had the most shepherds, angels and sheep that has ever been seen before. Before the Nativity play took place we had our Christmas Dinner and Disco. Massive thanks to Jonathan and Becky Beddoes for cooking us an immense feast and making sure that none of us left hungry! I believe they are already booked for this years party on Friday December 14th – details will be supplied nearer the time.

To finish the year, we had our Nativity play at Holy Trinity Church. The Exmouth Town Concert Band joined us and it was great to see so many of you there with your families and friends. The Nativity play was a great success and I know you reduced many of our audience to tears with your performance, as we also welcomed Ty and his girlfriend Bea back from Canada for Christmas. Massive well done to all of you who took part especially Luke for his narration, thank you all to costume / prop / mince pie makers. This looks likely to become a regular event and I already have ideas of how we can develop the play this year. Lastly we also learnt just before Christmas that our Tigers Football Team were ending the year Top of the League.

As Club Leader I am immensely proud of each and every member for all that you do and achieve and how you develop year on year. You all should be very proud of yourselves as well – you are all great and achieving so much whilst more importantly having fun!J

Obviously all these fun things come at a cost and whilst we have been very lucky to receive donations this year from organisations including the Jamieson Bystock Trust, David Gibbons Foundation, Western Power, TSB Exmouth, Normans Trust, Exmouth Rotary, Exmouth Getaway Club, Sun Lodge Masons, County Councillors plus individual donations we need to continue to keep these monies coming in. Alongside raising funds for club nights, day trips and respite breaks we are also continuing to raise funds for our bus. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions for fundraising then please let me know.

During 2017 we had several new members join us, also some members who hadn’t been for a number of years returned to us but sadly we lost previous members Myrtle Dunn and Dennis Gooding.

2017 saw a number of people celebrate significant birthdays Andrew Howard turned 50 In March, Rae Savage turned 30 in April, Pam Wilson was 65 in May, Robert Hatfield celebrated his 60th also in May, Ian Barrie turned 50 in June, Lauren Edwards and Bex Bell celebrated their 21st in August, Hannah Pooley turned30 in September, we celebrated Peter Lovell 50th and Elizabeths 70th whilst we were on holiday in October and Nick Higgins snuck off to India to celebrate his 60th in November. Wendy Maidement finished the year celebrating her 60th in December.

This year we see Luke Eveleigh turn 40, Leonie Hartnell celebrates her 30th and Chris Bell turn 50 all in April, Brian Richardson reaches 50 in June, Bob Wilson is 70 in July, Molly Casey-Tancock is also 30 in whilst Richard Hearn turns 65 and David Stradling is 60 all during September, Rosemary Wayman and Linda Wilks both turn 65 on the same day in November, and to finish the year Clive Stevens is 50 and Heather Shaw is 60! Wow it looks like it’s going to be very busy birthday year again.

Please remember Club Nights are subject to change at short notice

Firstly, I know a lot of you have been poorly with various colds, coughs, sickness bugs etc. and please can I ask you that if you are suffering that you stay away from Club so as not to share it with the other members/helpers etc. With regards to sickness the guidelines are 48 hours after last episode of illness. Please adhere to this. Thank you.

 Club Times – Please can I remind you again that Club is open unless advised every Monday from 6.30pm to 9pm. A few of you have been turning up before 6.30pm which is fine but we need to advise that you are only insured between these times and we cannot guarantee that anyone will be at Club to let you in before 6.30pm and you could be out in the rain/cold. This also applies to trips, outings, nights out etc. When we give you times to meet please stick to these times and do not turn up before as we can’t always get in the Club as it may be in use by others. This was the case for the recent holiday a number of you arrived very early and we had nowhere to go because the Club was in use. Please can I also remind you that when you are at Club and using a puzzle, pens, games etc. to pack them away (with help if required) before you go home rather than leave them for someone else to do.  Membership Form

We sent out a new membership form in July that a number of you were good enough to complete, however under our insurance this has to be done every January so that we have up to date details of EVERY member who attends club. You will therefore find within this letter a new form to be completed and returned by the 29th Jan 2018. If this form isn’t returned fully completed and we would rather have too much information than not enough then you may find that you are not able to attend Club. Please note that this form will need to be renewed every January and applies to all Tigers players as well.

 Beetle Drive with Supper – Monday 29th January 2018

During the evening of playing games we will have a supper of baked potatoes with salad and a variety of fillings including cheese, coleslaw, ham, beans etc. There is no additional cost for this and will be covered within your subs. Tuck shop will be open as normal.

 Quiz Night – Fundraising event Wednesday 24th January 2018 @ The Maltsters Arms, Woodbury.

As our first fundraiser for 2018 Paul is hosting a quiz at the Maltsters Arms in Woodbury starting at 7.30pm. Please encourage your family, support staff etc. to put together teams of up to 6 people and help raise funds. Enclosed is a poster for this event if you would kindly display it. Cost is £6.00 per person that includes a curry. There will be a raffle, as well as round prizes etc. Come and join us and help raise funds for Club. Hopefully if this quiz is successful it’s something we can look to do more often J


Majorca Holiday – 13th to 20th June 2018 cost £450 person

For those of you yet to book your place on this holiday there are very few places left so book one asap if you would like to go. Deposit is £25 and full cost (inclusive of deposit) is £450. This covers flight, transfers, all inclusive (all meals, snacks, drinks etc.) accommodation. You will need approx. €200 spending money and to arrange your own travel insurance which should cover all your medical conditions. Full payment will be due by 1st May. If you would like to go but are unsure whether you can afford it, please talk to Emma.

 Shrek – Bristol Hippodrome – Sunday 12th August 2018

We have arranged a trip to see Shrek The Musical at the Bristol Hippodrome on Sunday 12th August 5pm, cost per person is £40 which includes show ticket and transport. Places for this trip are limited so it will be done on a first come first serve bases with payment.

We will leave Exmouth approximately 9.30am and get to Bristol for some lunch and shopping (you will need money for this and drinks etc.) and return to Exmouth at approximately 9.30pm. Please complete the form overleaf and return asap with your money. If you are bringing your own support cost for them will be £40.

 Oxford Holiday – Friday 19th October – 22nd October 2018

We have arranged a weekend respite break to the Jurys Inn, Oxford in October at a cost of £250 per person which includes bed, breakfast, dinner, evening entertainment, day trip and coach travel. You will need approx. £75 – £100 spending money on top of this. If you would like to go on this trip, again places are limited, then please return the form overleaf with your deposit of £25. Again if you would like to pay in instalments, directly in to the bank or would like to go but not sure if you can afford it then please see Emma. No places are secured without deposit.

 PLEASE NOTE – All holidays / trips are subsidised by club funds, to benefit from this regular attendance at club is required. If you would like to come, and don’t attend club regularly, then, please speak to Paul/Emma for a revised price.

We are currently looking for ideas for other day trips and club nights, if you have any that are suitable for the majority then please let me know. So far suggestions for day trips include Weston Super Mare pier, and afternoon tea, Plymouth aquarium and the Barbican/Hoe etc., Longleat, Bridgewater Carnival and a steam train. Please let me know your thoughts on these and any others J

 Payment by BACS

We are happy for you to pay your subs by BACS but would require you to pay a minimum of 4 weeks at a time which would be non-returnable if you are unable to attend for one of those weeks. You can also pay for trips etc. this way.

If you would like to pay your subs or trips by BACS transfer, then please ask Emma or Paul for the details

We have been asked by a few of you if you are able to purchase hoodies, sweatshirts etc. Paul is going to look into this and hopefully in the next couple of months will have prices and an order form available for you.

We would like to celebrate this in style and would love as much input from you the members as its your club! I have had some ideas already and have listed them on an attached piece of paper for you to vote on and add your own ideas. Please complete these and return them and lets make it a whole year of celebrations J

Lastly all of the helpers including myself give up their spare time to help run the Club, the majority of us work full time and we are all volunteers. Paul and I are not always able to answer your emails, calls or questions straight away because we are at work during the day so please don’t think we are ignoring you but our day jobs have to come first. Now for some thank yous firstly to my husband Paul, who is also Club Secretary without your support and your spreadsheets we most certainly wouldn’t be as organised as we are! Plus your procurement skills ensure we always get a good deal for everything! Nick and Sally as Deputy Leader and Treasurer thank you also for your support, and for carrying out all the banking/accounts. Plus Nick your birthday announcements are legendary. And to the rest of the volunteers Nikki, Jaz, Leonie, Gerry, Carolyn, Steve, Linda, Pam, Neil, Jess, Barbara, Nick and Chris thank you for your continued support and help without you all Club wouldn’t be as amazing as it is. And to you the members thank you for giving us all a great deal of pleasure. For Paul and I Gateway isn’t just a couple of hours on a Monday night and it isn’t our full time jobs but we wouldn’t have it any other way.   • Club starts at 6:30pm and finishes at 9pm – please arrange your lifts / taxis etc for these times.
  • If you are poorly please do not come to Club
  • When using activities from the cupboard please remember to put the lids back on pens, puzzles back in boxes and put them away. Thanks
